White Alone Population

In South Carolina in 1999, 8.6 percent of the White Alone population lived below poverty. This marked only a slight increase from 1989, when 8.5 percent of the White population lived below poverty.

African American Alone Population

In South Carolina in 1999, 26.4 percent of the African American Alone population lived below poverty. This was a decrease from 1989, when 31.4 percent of the African American population lived below poverty.

The Other Race population includes the following Census-designated racial categories: American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, Some Other Race, and Two or More Races.

In South Carolina in 1999, 19.6 percent of the Other population lived below poverty. This was an increase from 1989, when 15.1 percent of the Other population lived below poverty.

Hispanic Population

The Hispanic population in South Carolina has more than tripled in the past ten years, and the percentage of the Hispanic or Latino population living below poverty has increased as well. In 1989, 15.6 percent of the Hispanic population in South Carolina lived below poverty, while 25.4 percent were below poverty in 1999.
