In South Carolina in 1999, 8.6 percent of the White Alone population lived below poverty. This marked only a slight increase from 1989, when 8.5 percent of the White population lived below poverty.

The Hispanic population in South Carolina has more than tripled in the past ten years, and the percentage of the Hispanic or Latino population living below poverty has increased as well.
