Household Income in South Carolina

Household Income includes the income of the householder and all persons 15 years old and over in the household, whether related to the householder or not. Since many households consist of one person, average household income is usually less than average family income.

South Carolinians were behind the national average for households with an annual income of $100,000 or more in 1999. 8.1 percent of households in South Carolina reported an annual household income of $100,000 or more, compared with 12.3 percent of households in the United States.

  • 8.2 percent of households with a White householder in South Carolina had an annual income of less than $10,000 in 1999, compared with 21.5 percent of African American households and 11.7 percent of other race households.
     
  • Nationally, 7.9 percent of White households, 19.1 percent of African American households, and 12.1 percent of Other households had incomes below $10,000 in 1999.

South Carolinians of all races were behind the national average for households with an annual income of $100,000 or more in 1999.

  • 10.1 percent of White households in South Carolina had a household income greater than $100,000 in 1999, compared with 13.4 percent of White households nationally.
     
  • 2.8 percent African American households in South Carolina had incomes greater than $100,000, compared with 5.8 percent nationally.
