Year Structures Built in South Carolina

In the United States in 2000, housing units built before 1940 outnumbered units built between 1995 and March 2000. The Census Bureau counted 17.4 million units (15 percent) built before 1940 and 11.2 million units (9.7 percent) built between 1995 and March 2000.

In South Carolina, new housing units tend to outnumber older units. Statewide, 6.1 percent of housing units were built before 1940 and 15.3 percent were built between 1995 and March 2000.

Owners were more likely than renters to live in new houses. Of the 1,107,619 owner-occupied housing units in South Carolina in 2000, 17.3 percent were built between 1995 and March 2000. New units occupied by renters comprised 9.6 percent of all renter-occupied units.

Renters were more likely than owners to live in old houses (those built before 1940). Of the 426,235 renter-occupied housing units in South Carolina in 2000, 7.1 percent were built before 1940. Old units occupied by owners comprised 5.8 percent of all owner-occupied units.
