The Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) program provides model-based estimates of health insurance coverage for counties and states. They have developed the following experimental estimates for counties and states for 2000.
Health Insurance Coverage for the Total Population: 2000
| South Carolina | United States | |
|---|---|---|
| Number Insured | 3,389,462 | 239,713,822 |
| Number Uninsured | 583,747 | 39,803,537 |
| 90% Confidence Interval* (±) | 24,888 | 492,720 |
| Percent Uninsured | 14.7 | 14.2 |
| 90% Confidence Interval* (±) | 1 | 0.2 |
* A confidence interval is a range of values that, with some level of certainty, contains the true value the estimate is approximating. It is a measure of an estimate's variability; the larger the confidence interval in relation to the size of the estimate, the less reliable the estimate. For example, each state and county estimate is listed with a 90 percent confidence interval. This means that for a particular estimate, if we carried out our estimation procedure and created a confidence interval 100 times, the actual value that the estimate is approximating is in that interval approximately 90 out of the 100 times.
Health Insurance Coverage for the Population Under 18 Years: 2000
| South Carolina | United States | |
|---|---|---|
| Number Insured | 890,702 | 63,696,617 |
| Number Uninsured | 123,121 | 8,617,432 |
| 90% Confidence Interval (±) | 8,177 | 244,607 |
| Percent Uninsured | 12.1 | 11.9 |
| 90% Confidence Interval (±) | 1 | 0.3 |
