Population in Labor Force

Of the population 16 years and over in South Carolina, African Americans had the lowest percentage of the population in the labor force in 2000. 59.2 percent of the African American population 16 years and over was in the labor force in 2000, compared with 64.8 percent of the White population, 69.2 percent of the Other population, and 71.2 percent of the Hispanic population.

Unemployment

African Americans in South Carolina had the highest percentage of unemployment in 2000. 6.4 percent of the African American population 16 years and over were unemployed in 2000, compared with 2.5 percent of the White population, 4.5 percent of the Other race population, and 4.5 percent of the Hispanic population.

In The United States, 6.9 percent of the African American population was unemployed in 2000, compared with 3.0 percent of the White population, 5.2 percent of the Other Race population, and 5.7 percent of the Hispanic population.

Employed Population

In South Carolina in 2000, 1.1 percent of the White population, 0.9 percent of the African American population, 3.7 percent of the Other Race population, and 4.7 percent of the Hispanic population were employed in the armed forces. The remaining employed population in South Carolina was employed in the civilian labor force. 61.1 percent of Whites, 51.9 percent of African Americans, 61.1 percent of Other races, and 61.9 percent of Hispanics were employed in the civilian labor force in 2000. The remainder of the population was either unemployed or not in the labor force.
