Earnings by Sex in South Carolina

The U.S. Census Bureau defines earnings as the algebraic sum of wage or salary income and net income from self-employment. Earnings represent the amount of income received regularly before deductions for personal income taxes, Social Security, bond purchases, union dues, Medicare deductions, etc.

Women in South Carolina earned significantly less than men did in 1999. In South Carolina, 46.0 percent of men earned less than $25,000 in 1999, compared with 69.2 percent of women. 18.2 percent of men earned more than $50,000 in 1999, compared with only 5.1 percent of women.

In the United States, 42.3 percent of men earned less than $25,000 in 1999, compared with 62.8 percent of women. 24.4 percent of men earned $50,000 or more in 1999, compared with only 9.3 percent of women.

Median Earnings by Sex

The median earnings for women in 45 of the 46 counties in South Carolina were below the national average of $18,957 in 1999. The counties with the highest median earnings for women were Lexington ($20,628), Greenville ($18,797), and Richland ($18,681). The counties with the lowest median earnings for women were Williamsburg ($13,667), Colleton ($14,070), and Lee ($14,526).

The median earnings for men in 41 of the 46 counties in South Carolina were below the national average of $29,458 in 1999. The counties with the highest median earnings for men were Lexington ($30,775), York ($30,650), and Greenville ($30,646). The counties with the lowest median earnings for men were Bamberg ($20,105), Lee ($20,317), and Allendale ($20,710).
