Disability Status by Sex in South Carolina

From ages 5 to 64, fewer women than men tend to have disabilities. For the population age 65 and over, slightly more women than men have at least one disability. Across all age groups, South Carolina has a higher percentage than the United States of both males and females with at least one disability.

In South Carolina in 2000, 8.0 percent of male children ages 5 to 15 had at least one disability - higher than the U.S. average of 7.2 percent for males of the same age group. 4.6 percent of females ages 5 to 15 in South Carolina had at least one disability, compared with the national average of 4.3 percent of females in the same age group.

Among older adults age 65 and over, 43.9 percent of males and 47.2 percent of females in South Carolina had at least one disability in 2000. Nationwide, 40.4 percent of males and 43.0 percent of females had at least one disability.
