Looking at disability status by race, the White population in South Carolina had the lowest rate of disabilities in 2000. 20.5 percent of the White population age 5 and over had a disability, compared with 21.5 percent of the Other race population and 26.3 percent of the African American population.
The populations of all three race groups in South Carolina had a higher rate of disabilities than the national averages. In the United States in 2000, 18.5 percent of the White population age 5 and over, 19.6 of the Other race population, and 24.3 percent of the African American population had some type of disability.
